437. To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy.{William Hardy} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}4/MH.{M. Huckerby}26.6.39. B.V. PROPELLOR SHAFT. We know that for a given number of passengers we can eliminate the drive prop shaft vibration at 50 m.p.h. by suitably inclining the rear axle. We cannot get the angles right for all load conditions. Olley mentioned the other day that the difficulty with over-hung pinions of the prop. shaft joint fouling the rear seat on max. bump can be overcome by having the axle offset on the spring, so that on bump the axle twists downwards. This is just what we want for the propellor shaft vibration. We suggest Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} gets a drawing made to show what benefit we might derive from this arrangement, towards keeping the angle of the rear joint constant for varying buffer clearances.
