NOTE. CJB/E26/10/22 At the conference held at Derby on the 25th October, CJ emphasized very strongly that in connection with the Goshawk no alterations must be made (except minor alterations for which BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} takes responsibility, concerning whihh he is sure that they are not likely to affect the reliability or running of the car) beyond those which were approved at the conference of the 13th July. CJ read the memorandum which he had addressed to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} in this matter and Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}'s reply. CJ asked Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} whether he was able to confirm the statement made in the last paragraph of his memorandum. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} said 'yes', that no alterations had been made beyond those which were approved at the conference above named. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} suggested that there might be greater latitude in connection with the alterations in the earlier days of the Goshawk. CJ said that he had expected some such suggestion but that he would resist it to the utmost and wished all those concerned to understand that this was an institution which had been in operation for very many years and was considered to be one of the foundations of the Company's success and. that any disregard of it would be looked upon as a most serious breach of the Company's instructions. CJ further stated that he had on more than one occasion asked that the cards, which were used prior to the war and during the war in connection with aero engines, showing the date on which each operation should be completed, such as ordering material, receipt of material, receipt of drawings from R.{Sir Henry Royce}, receipt of drawings from By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} by the Manufacturing Department, etc., in order that the goods might be delivered at a certain date, should be prepared in connection with the Goshawk. CJ asked that these cards should be re-instituted in connection with every series of 40/50 HP and of Goshawk and that the state of affairs should be examined once a week and a report sent to those concerned and to CJ, showing what Departments were behindhand in the programme and to what extent and stating the delay which was likely to occur in the delivery of the goods owing to such delays.
