I have enquired of those in the car as to the cause of the valve sticking open and there appears to be no definite cause for the trouble. When they examined it when the stoppage occurred all that was found was that the valve was fixed in its guide and open. They simply moved the valve and it sprang back on to its seat and was OK.
All I can think of that could have caused the trouble is that a bit of dirt may have become jammed in the guide. Everything was well lubricated and there appeared to be no wear on the valve stem. It is worth while examining a valve complete with springs & washers to see if there is anything which could become jammed supposing the valve were flung further from its seat than normal due to the tappet lever striking the valve when the latter was bouncing on its seat at very high revs.
