To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}. from GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} 1139 ? Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}5/N.1.4.38. Phantom III - Hub Bearings. The question of noisy hub bearings has been receiving investigation. Up to the present there has been no evidence of how the foreign matter has got into the bearings. The one sent to you must have been fitted up without the inside of the hub being washed out, and so far as I can gather, the one reported recently is due to insufficient care in cleaning when being fitted up. These cases have been cured by thoroughly washing and blowing out of the races. There is no evidence of dirt entering from an external source, and we have no evidence of foreign matter being worn off adjacent parts. Any evidence which I can gather will be duly forwarded.
