BRAKE DRUMS WITH "CAST-IN" STEEL BACK PLATES.

With reference to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Vs.{J. Vickers}2/JT.16.3.38., in view of the material economy effected by these pressed back plate drums, we have incorporated the arrangement in all our new designs. If we are going to achieve the factory cost called for on B.50, we have got to take advantage of current American practice. We believe it is true to say that almost every brake drum in America being produced to-day has a "cast-in" steel back plate.

We should anticipate that it would be difficult to get the correct result first time.

The points raised by RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Vs.{J. Vickers} all seem to be reasonable.

No more designs are being issued with flat back plates, and, in the meantime, we should be glad if HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} would co-operate with RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Vs.{J. Vickers} to make the existing flat back plates the best shape to suit the foundry.

There seems to be some doubt as to whether economy will result from casting fins on the drum, and then machining them, and this being so, we would recommend that the first drums should be cast solid. Having perfected the cast-in back plate, we could then go ahead to find the most economical way of producing the ribs.
