20 HP. DYNAMO.

With reference to EFC2/T.21.3.27. there is a distinct advantage to be gained at the present moment in the Works being permitted to make modifications to the 20 HP. dynamos when they turn out noisy when produced originally.

In regard to the point raised in your fourth paragraph that I am of the opinion that the modified dynamo was noisy, this is a misunderstanding. The remark in question was based upon your expressed views. As a matter of fact Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} had not tried the dynamo. Our general experience is that whether it is a 20 HP. or 40/50 HP. dynamo we invariably obtain quietness when we put in the single modification to the eccentric pole shoes.

In regard to the point in your second memo, where you suggest that Mr.Brock's test was run without the end cover, this was not the case. The end cover was actually fitted. I am not quoting Mr.Brock's opinion in this, as I called for a second test after your report and personally inspected the dynamo and the conditions under which it was run.

The point I had in my previous memo in referring to test conditions was that it is absolutely essential that the test conditions on production should be as much above question as those in the Experimental Dept. and if there is anything at all which is open to criticism technically from your point of view, I would like to know precisely what the fault is, and how it can be remedied, and will immediately arrange to have our test tackle modified so that it corresponds exactly with the testing apparatus in your Department.

In the case of the 20 HP. as well as the 40/50 HP, I wish to urge upon you the necessity for a curve on a modified dynamo being permitted, which is outside of our present range. I would base my reasons for it on the same argument put forward in the case of the 40/50 HP.

In regard to the question of making a certain number of armatures with the different number of slots, which appears to you, from the Experimental work so far carried out, to be a definite improvement from the point of view of quietness, I am quite prepared to obtain Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}'s consent
