DERBY.

Dear Sirs,

For the attention of Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives.

We beg to acknowledge yours of the 17th February and note that you are about to carry out tests on "Kestrel" engines with fuels having specified Octane numbers.

Since D.T.D. 134 is supplied by about four contractors, and although the knock ratings are all the same, the actual spirits which make up the fuels have different characteristics, therefore, the amount of "lead" required to meet a given Octane value will vary with each contractor's fuel.

We think, therefore, that it would save time if you would indicate to us which contractor will be supplying to your requirements and we will get a curve made out showing the Octane values with various concentrations of "lead" up to 4 c.c.'s per Imperial gallon.

Yours very truly,

F.{Mr Friese} R.{Sir Henry Royce} BANKS.
