X522 RE SIDE SHAFT GEARS. It has always been a matter of difficulty to obtain quiet side shaft gears and they cannot be produced with any degree of certainty. At present gears are being quietened by using various thicknesses of oil in the gear box. It is now proposed to use one standard oil - Price's Motorine A -, this will most likely make it much more difficult to obtain the requisite number of quiet side shaft gears, as we shall not be able to silence any gears by adding thick oil to the box as hitherto. The way out of the trouble seems to me, to alter the type of side shaft gear to either single or double helical; a double helical gear can be got into the present box by slight alteration and some of these are being made in 8's and 12's pitch. We have one pair of 8's pitch in a box and they are fairly good, although I think we can get this type of gear much better. The double helical gear is rather heavy compared with the ordinary spur gear but I think it could be lightened before being standardised. We should receive the 12's pitch in about a week and I expect better results from these. Single helical gears could easily be fitted in the | ||
