Copy to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} I shall be glad if you will come to some con-clusion as to what is the best viscosity of oil to use in our gear box to prevent the side sgaft being unnecessarily noisy. I have always thought that we have used too thick an oil, and that we fitted the gear box teeth too tightly. R.{Sir Henry Royce} We find thinner oil better also under load, and it should be better for changing gear, and saving a waste of power. I am much in favour of using an oil like Price's Motorine A all round the car for temperate climates it should be compounded with lard and possibly also some first pressing castor. F.H.R.
