1104 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 28th April, 1938. W.R. Boyle, Esq., Messrs. Morris Motors Ltd., Engines Branch, Courthouse Green, COVENTRY. Dear Boyle, Many thanks for the information re the valve and gearbox grinding. Referring to Taub's figures which I sent you, the following is my interpretation of what they mean:- The first column is - cubic ft. per ton, per mile displacement. I think that the N. is a misprint for M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} The figures under 20, 35, 50 and 60 represent fuel consumptions at steady speeds. The figures under 11% and 7% are a measure of performance taken on these gradients on the Proving ground. I understand that they refer to a speed in miles per hour which is attained passing a certain point after starting lower down the gradient from another fixed point at a given speed. All I was interested in was that there was no appreciable difference in any of these columns to show that the push rod engine was better than the side valve engine. Yours sincerely, | ||
