Chassis 9-GIII.

We have, on this morning's run, broken the N.S.R. spring. The top leaf has broken 9" from centre bolt - front end of spring. Fourth leaf broken 3 1/2" from front end.

The breaking of this spring has shewn that the shackle locating lugs, three in all, are not sufficiently strong enough to withstand the strain of the axle. These three have sheared off, so allowing the axle to come further back than it should have done, and we are very fortunate that the brake mechanism had not cut right through into the rear portion of the tank. As it is, it has grooved it rather badly, but there is no leak. The fracture is a straight clean one across the spring leaf. The fourth leaf looks as if it has been cracked some time. This leaf is a tie leaf.

We have telephoned to Paris for two rear springs, which they have promised to let us have on the 28th instant.
