Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mr Swindells Gerride GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} BENTLEY CHASSIS NO. B-97-GP ENGINE NO. J-6-BY MR.J.W.FINCH COMPLAINT OF POOR OIL CONSUMPTION This car was received from Kingsbury for a new engine to be fitted to overcome complaint of excessive oil consumption. By arrangement with Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} the car was passed to me for a new engine to be fitted ex production. Owing to shortage of chassis due to the strike, the only engine available had not completed its normal routine and to obtain a good oil consumption quickly we gave it 250 miles run on the dynamometer. After fitting engine in the customer's car we obtained an oil consumption of over 1000 m.p.g. on our usual test route of Derby to Weedon and return, a distance of 100 miles which we cover in 2½ hrs. an average speed of 40 m.p.h.. Before removing the original engine from the car we made a test for oil consumption which gave a result of 530 m.p.g. Reviewing the report of GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} on the work done by K on this engine, they seem to have covered all the points which would have a bearing on oil consumption, and in the light of our experience, we decided to give the engine a run on the unit bed, to bed in the new piston rings. contd- | ||
