re:- Sound damping and heat insulation.
--------------------------------------

We have had the body for 5-B-4 treated with Limpet. Unfortunately, through inexperienced operatives too heavy a coat, which has been too tightly pressed, was put on. The area covered was, approximately, 246 sq. ft. and the weight will be in the neighbourhood of 20 lbs, approximately, 8 ozs. per sq. ft. We have arranged with Messrs. Park Ward & Co. to remove some of this by means of a wire brush, when the weight will fall to about 12 lbs.

Messrs. Park Ward say that an Enclosed Limousine - 25 H.P. R.R. - which they had treated, was increased 56 lbs in weight. We think this is too much and have suggested that they should reduce the thickness of coat, which was in the neighbourhood of 3/8", heavily pressed.

We learn that the Rover Company, who have been using this process for over a year, use a lightly pressed coat of 1/8", which would give, approximately, 4 ozs per sq. ft.

We have received from Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} a sample and particulars of a new material called "Seapak", which is of greater interest to us than Limpet in that it can be bought in sheets and stuck on by the Coach-builder. We are sending to E a sample and certain literature on the subject, as we feel that it may be of interest in connection with heat and sound insulation of the dashboard.

When a suitable body comes through we hope to try this material, but, at the same time, we are following up yet another material known as "Kautex", made by Kautex (Plastics) Ltd.

We shall report on the trial of cars tested with Limpet shortly, but we feel that we must persevere with our investigations of these materials from the point-of-view of sound and heat insulation, inso-much as similar treatments are almost universally employed by American Manufacturers.

We are also finding out what materials were used by Short Bros.,
