EXIDE BATTERY EX CHASSIS 1SC.

In response to a telephone request from your Mr. Allen, I duly examined this battery to judge the reason for the top of the battery getting in a mess with acid.

It would appear to be purely a case of continued overcharging without much use of the battery.

The battery should be removed and washed down with water with all stoppers in. The links and nuts should then be removed, cleaned and liberally greased and duly replaced, the top of the battery being allowed to dry of the water which has rinsed away the acid.

I think the customer might be referred to various portions in our Instruction Book, as he does not appear to be carrying out the recommendations therein contained. The references are (i.e. in the issue of March 1926) p.63 - Battery Connections, p.69 - Use of Combined Ignition and Charging Switch, p.70 - Care of Battery under Running Conditions, and p.7 of the Exide Pamphlet paras. 15 and 22.

It would appear that the customer is at present damaging his battery by considerable overcharging, and he should be prepared to run for fair periods now and again on battery ignition only. If everything is in order, the power will be equal and no harm will be done to the set of sparking plugs which are out of use.

This is recommended in the first section of our chapter on the Care of Battery.

EFC.

We have experiments in hand an apparatus for the purpose of reducing rate of charge to a fully charged battery.
