Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X4706 To WCR. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By re Single Cylinder Units for Chassis Engine Development. The utility of cylinder engine test units for experimental work is generally admitted, and from time to time it has been agreed that we ought to have some running on chassis work. We have recently been looking into the position of this question and we find there is a set of completed schemes for a Phantom unit which were done in 1931, and which have never been detailed. The same unit would be applicable for testing smaller cylinders, particularly with the cylinder block attached independently of the head. There are new designs of cylinder heads, valves etc. which we should like to test, but these cannot be done on a full scale engine owing to the time, trouble and expense involved. We, therefore, propose to revive this single unit, as with one or two changes in the design such as substitution of double battery ignition for the relay controlled magneto and battery, a different system of cylinder attachment and more easily detachable camshaft, it can be brought up-to-date with our requirements, and we should like to build two units so that two sizes of cylinder can be on development at the same time, or one unit can be running while the other is being changed.
