The use of battery and magneto ignition systems, with proposed amendments to a 'Care of Battery' manual section.

Contrary to the recommendation which in the case of the "Silver Ghost", it is not undesirable to run on the battery ignition only, because

(1) It is not detrimental to that set of plugs out of action, particularly as this is the magneto set, and the magneto is the more capable of burning them clean,

(2) The sparking plug positions in the two cases are practically identical in effect so that no loss of power occurs and no more detonation is produced by running on battery ignition only, than by running on both ignitions together.

Slow running is better on battery ignition only than on magneto only. Therefore, whereas the MC position is only used for comparatively short periods, it is intended that there should be no hesitation in using the B position when the condition of no charge to the battery is desired.

The battery ignition provides

(1) Easier starting.
(2) Easier slow running.
(3) Re-starting without using the starter motor."

Use of Combined Ignition and Charging Switch.

We suggest that in the first par. we delete the word "kept", so that it reads :-

"As already mentioned, this switch should normally be in the MB and C position, giving magneto ignition, battery ignition and charge.".

In the second par. (5th line) we suggest we alter to -

"In circumstances, however, in which the battery is known to be fully charged, especially if the car is running at a moderate speed only, a period on battery ignition ile. discharging the battery at low rate, should be run. On the other
