X 5661 To Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} from EFC. c. BY MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}/Mr. Daykin. c. SFT{Mr Swift}/Mr. Brock. EFC3/T16.12.26. RE DYNAMO S.5.H. EX TEST DEPT. X.5783do. The noise of this machine was demonstrated to us on a chassis on the road and it did not impress us as being a particularly bad one. The procedure we suggest in the case of a very bad machine which Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} considers impassible, is that it should be returned to Mr. Brock and that he makes an alteration to the pole pieces to 50% of the extent of the alteration which he would like to make. This will effect a compromise between the noise and the upsetting of the output curve. After the change has been made, and Mr. Brock is satisfied that some quietening has been effected, we should be prepared in very bad cases (originally) ourselves to pass the machine on output for production, if we felt that the output was not too much affected. This would be a compromise to which perhaps BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} would agree. In this connection Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} will no doubt be interested in an experimental armature which we have produced with the definite idea of reducing the noisiness of machines, and we are pleased to be able to be in a position to send over the particular machine No.161 (carcase) for Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} to try on perhaps one or two chassis. If he would let us know when the trial is to take place, my assistant will be pleased to see the result. So far, this particular armature, though thoroughly tested as satisfactory on the bench for output, has not yet been on one of our expl. cars. The two machines are being sent to you.
