TELEPHONE: LYMINGTON 520 (5 LINES) TELEGRAMS: WELLWORTHY CODE: MARCONI YOUR REF 30th August, 1939. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Limited, Derby. Dear Mr. Robotham, In your letter on the subject of bearings which failed at Dennis Bros., you mentioned the point we had put forward that oil was exactly to Dennis' standard practice, but we should qualify this by stating that this only applies to the amount of oil circulated to the bearings and the pressure, that is the pump is a standard pump used with various types of bearings, and the amount of oil circulated compared with other bearings and clearances of bearings which were tried out. I now learn, however, that there was one material difference in that the aluminium bearings were run with Delvac 3 oil. The main feature regarding this oil is to get over rings sticking, and while it is the opinion both of Dennis and for that matter we ourselves confirm also that the oil does do what is claimed for it in this respect, it does appear to have given trouble on bearings, and Dennis are not using it on the engine on which they are carrying out further developments, a but which is fitted for the moment with lead bronze bearings. [Handwritten note: VACUUM] More AC.9 bearings are being fitted this weekend and the tests will be continued. We will keep you informed as to the result of the test, the only change in which will be the oil used. We shall be interested to know whether you have had any experience in the same direction, and whether in your opinion this oil is in any way responsible for the failure. Yours sincerely, FBlackith ROLLS-ROYCE A.{Mr Adams} C. 9. BEARINGS ALUMINIUM CASTINGS LABORATORY TESTING CYLINDER LINERS & LINER CASTINGS | ||
