Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
Derby.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

I am giving below an extract from a letter received from Mr. Milne of Dennis Bros. in connection with the AC.9 bearings, and I sent him a copy of your letter in relation to the bearings which you had examined. His remarks are as follows:-

"In connection with Messrs. Rolls Royce comment upon the condition of the big end bearings which you referred to them for inspection, it would be interesting if Messrs. R.R. could give us some indication as to why the big end bearings have suddenly commenced to move in the connecting rods. In the first series of tests they were perfect and the marks on the bearing surface were ideal. On the last test when clearances had not been modified, but then a change had been made in the lubricating oil, it is evident that a considerable amount of overheating had taken place. Should they be able to advise us from their previous experience that a change in the grade of lubricating oil used, would have such a marked effect upon the behaviour of the bearings, then we can endeavour to confine our tests to oils which have given best results on previous tests."

Should you have any points to raise in connection with Mr. Milne's remarks we shall be very pleased to pass them on to him as in spite of the troubles he has experienced on e way and another, that is with the centre main bearings which
