It is difficult to understand the time such things take but we find certain differences between RR. and Buick conditions: we need helical ground gears, they use straight unground gears - i.e. easy change, but not silent 3rd.
We are providing for helical ground gears and it has given us a great amount of work to find the best construction for detaching the cone clutches, which must in our case be of large dia. (Buick can construct in one piece because gears are not spiral or ground.) A small clutch might be possible, as in the Warner gear, if the car had a freewheel.
However our scheme seems robust enough and is approaching completion at 2.5" longer in the box. The jaw clutch we have taken some trouble to cut by Fellows system or drilling, the sliding members are smaller in dia. and have we think better control than Buick large dia.
Messrs Hardy, Day, and myself, have spent much time before we could find a satisfactory scheme.
