Dear Sirs, In reply to yours of the 16th. the usual object in filling a coil with bitumen is, partly to secure everything in place against vibration, and partly to seal everything up against ingress of moisture. With some constructions it is possible to obtain an air tight joint without the use of bitumen, but even then it seems to me that bitumen is a convenient means for securing all the parts against relative movement. Admittedly, bitumen filling makes the coil almost impossible to take down for repair, but after all a modern coil very rarely goes wrong, and in view of its low cost of production the best thing to do, if it goes wrong, is simply scrap it and replace it.
