From the Rolls-Royce experimental archive: a quarter of a million communications from Rolls-Royce, 1906 to 1960's. Documents from the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation (SHRMF).

the Experimental Dept. may find some few points which it would be advantageous to modify. Any such points which occur, however, will be raised after the car in question has been examined.

It is difficult at the moment to thoroughly reckon up the position. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} will be here tomorrow. We are particularly interested in having them here to discuss a further piston modification which has come to hand, which involves a different type of ring, and therefore a different piston. We had reckoned that the second piston for which we received authorisation, settled the piston issue. Apparently it has not done so.

In addition, we are expecting the car back from the 10,000 miles in France on Thursday. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} will go over same, and any points which arise will be considered, and steps taken to meet same, where necessary.

It appears to me evident that we cannot keep the program which was arranged at the Conference on the 12th. as things are going.

Where Mr. Royce criticises the West WitteringHenry Royce's home town designs to which we are working, which were arranged and settled at the Conference of the 12th inst, apparently there is no alternative but to incorporate same. We will, of course, have to submit same for your consent, but we do not see any alternative other than using them.

This being so, it seems evident to us that some delay more than what was reckoned for at the Conference has got to be faced. Exactly how much, at the moment we cannot say, but when Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} arrive, and the car from France has been discussed and wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} has been able to size up the position in regard to what has been done to meet the requirements of the Conference of the 12th, we anticipate that we shall be able to have a Conference early next week, and place the whole of the facts before you, with the probable delay which will result from the changes in design, which it appears to us at the moment are being called for.
