- 2 - 2. Pistons. ---------- The modification has been asked for and agreed to. 3. Controls. ---------- Being submitted under the present heading. In addition to the foregoing, there are two other items which possibly R.{Sir Henry Royce} may have something to say about, namely, a/- Modification to the Exhaust Fittings. b/- Modification to pedals. So far as possible modifications from R.{Sir Henry Royce} are concerned, we think out of the 26 items dealt with, the above are the only ones it is probable R.{Sir Henry Royce} would want to modify, making two items only outstanding, to which he has not replied. In any case, it would appear to us necessary to incorporate R's modified designs, but in the meantime we are going ahead with what has been instructed. There is one other modification which we will have to ask permission to carry out, namely, to Calorize the Mild Steel Exhaust Down-takes, to prevent them being burned away under high load conditions of running, that is, the engine running full out all the time. The car which has been running in France has shown unmistakable signs of trouble here, in as much as the pipes themselves, where they are lagged with asbestos, have become almost only paper thickness, due to the burning away of the steel under the high temperature of the exhaust. The "Calorizing" treatment is coating same with Oxide of Aluminium. We do not think that this will cause more than a week's delay. It is probable that the car, which is running the 10,000 miles in France at the moment ( which we anticipate will complete the necessary mileage by Wednesday or Thursday of this week) returns to Derby, when Contd. | ||
