Issues with coarse carburetter filters, proposing finer duplex filters and alternative jet designs to prevent choked jets.

FILTERS. +8080 X.8190 Regarding filters, I was pleased to receive a note from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} shewing that the coarse filters were done to instructions by an error of judgment on my part. It will be noticed that my instructions only referred to the carburetter filter, and that it was in reply to a complaint that the carburetter filter was troublesome, whereas the real fault must have been elsewhere, because the carburetter filter should not get choked if it was supplied with properly filtered petrol only at the back tank, and the vacuum chamber should not add any dirt to it either from the ventilation, or from the induction pipe. It will now be noticed that my judgment suggests we must stick to the duplex filter, that both filters should be as fine as is practicable, and that it is better to have filters choked than to have an unreliable engine due to choked jets. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will remember that we have from time to time tried a parallel fitting needle with taper grooves in lieu of a fine annulus, but he has so far not obtained satisfaction from these, in spite of the fact that they ought to be as good as other peoples fixed dia. of round hole. We suggest that these should be retried if there is further trouble with blocked jets. We understand however that it only applies to the low speed jet. We have lately suggested for the high speed part an emulsion Claudel nozzle with a submerged jet. We might possibly use the same kind of thing for the low speed part. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
