T.R.R. 306. ST.{Capt. P. R. Strong} 30966. 6/11/37. C.E. SWOL - Celes EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT REPORT REFERENCE:— Lr{Mr Ellor}/HWS./SGL.6/GB.17.10.38. Subject of Report:— Vibration of 4.2" bore single cylinder liquid cooled sleeve valve engine. General Conclusion:— Vibration amplitudes have been measured from points corresponding to the top and bottom of the cylinder liner and also from the plug and thermocouple inserts which are expected to reproduce the movement of the junk head. It was found that considerable extension up to some .015" took place over the length of the cylinder, whilst additional diaphragm distortion of amplitudes up to .030" was recorded over the junk head. These displacements were at crankshaft half order frequency and were held to result from the combustion loading, the diagrams indicating that maximum amplitude was obtained very rapidly corresponding with the high rate of pressure rise. Some confirmation of the amplitude has been obtained with a stroboscope and arrangements have been made with Lr{Mr Ellor}/Psn/RVM. to investigate the diaphragm movement with an electrical contact arrangement. It is proposed to investigate the problem further, as it might be of account in the development of the Exe engine under higher ratings. The single cylinder sleeve valve unit is particularly suited for measurement of extensions under combustion loading. It is difficult at present to obtain comparable figures for a conventional in-line arrangement in view of the distribution of the loading along the length of the block and the fact that the head flexure is not accessible to the mechanical vibrograph in the case of poppet valve units. ------------------ Copies of Report Circulated to:— Psn.
