Re Messrs Brown Bailey's experimental casts of "Quick-step" Steel submitted with their letter HB{C. E. Harcombe}/MAR, 25/10/18.
The six samples were slightly forged down to 3/8" dia., and under this treatment it was evident that all except R407 were inclined to seaminess. In a letter from Messrs Brown Bailey's, this was explained by the fact that the samples did not represent the remainder of the casts in this respect, since they were forged under drastic conditions; the value of the tests, however, were very much reduced by the seaminess of the bars, and it was found that 4 of them gave evidence of flaws on machining. It might be noted, however, that R407 gave good results in forging and also good results comparable with those obtained previously on hot and cold tensile tests, these were not specially noteworthy since they were similar to the results obtained some months ago with steel similar to what we have been receiving in bulk. Of the others, 390 and 362 were the best both from stand point of working and tensile results; the remainder did not give so much information since they were all badly flawed. We conclude from what we have been able to do in the way of testing these samples, that the moderate carbon, viz about .43 is preferable and that the silicon is probably best between .6% and .8%; moderate variation in manganese and chromium do not appear to have any very definite effect so far as we can judge from the tests we have made on these six casts.
