Messrs. Rolls Royce, Ltd.,
DERBY.
Dear Sirs,
We beg to thank you for your letter of the 15th inst. and blue print showing the arrangement of thermostatic valve.
The diameter of the upper valve seating should be 1.280".
The holes in the valve will add considerably to the warming up time, it is our practice to use a 1/16" hole to avoid air lock and permit the filling of the system.
With regard to the temperature range required, we note your remarks about spring loading, and we agree with you as to its undesirability in the event of puncture of the bellows.
We are of the opinion that we can make a thermostat to do what you require, and as a preliminary we are making a test with one of similar type. The essentials as we understand them are that the thermostat must commence to open the valve at 75 centigrade, extend .250 at 82 degrees and spring fully open if punctured.
We will write you again, probably to-morrow, to let you know the result of our experience with the test thermostat.
Yours faithfully,
for S. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES) LIMITED.
