LONDON TRIALS. ---------- REPORT ON WORK DONE TO OVERCOME COMPLAINT OF TORQUE REACTION OR LOW SPEED VIBRATION. Firstly we overcame the objectionable accompanying noises which emanated from the neighbourhood of the instrument board. This was done in the main by altering the nearside fixing bracket for instrument board, which was not supporting the board properly. Also by re-fixing and packing with rubber strip the light 3 ply fixing at top of the board. We also cured a rattle from the nearside ventilator in scuttle. A rattle in nearside bonnet shutter was cured. A badly fitting lamp front on the nearside wing was rectified. After these jobs were done, the car was retested and it was considered that the car was more pleasant, particularly from a passenger's point of view, but there could still be some objection raised owing to the vibration felt at the steering wheel. Attempts to overcome this by dealing with the steering column were unavailing, and we finally achieved a good result by attention to the dashboard and scuttle adjustment. Briefly, what we have done is to make use of the inertia of the body to damp the chassis vibrations - this has been done by replacing the soft rubbers for dashboard isolation scheme by the medium hard type, which are the ones at present used and conform to the latest Experimental Dept's recommendations. For your inspection, I am sending you samples of the original soft rubber and medium hard ones which are now being used. The rear axle was not considered the best we could do, and during the investigation of the troubles complained of, we have taken the opportunity of fitting a quieter one.
