THEIR ACTION.
WHEN THE CAR SPRINGS ARE COMPRESSED,
The Impellor—which is an integral part of the shaft and is coupled to the lever arm—moves in, say, the direction of arrow "A"; the valves "V" in the fixed member open or lift from their seats, allowing the oil to pass freely from one section of the working chamber to the other, in a clockwise direction, offering no check to the movement of the Impellor blade, and consequently no retarding action of the spring—(on opposite side of a pair this action is reversed).
WHEN THE CAR SPRINGS RECOIL,
The Impellor reverses its direction of movement, the valves "V" close, and the oil in chambers "X" and "Y" check and control any further movement, the amount of which is governed by the position of the Regulating Rod, which, according to setting, allows a definite flow of oil from the compression chambers to the "free" chambers through Regulating Apertures (2), the energy of recoil being thus gradually brought to rest by this action, which is, as one can see, progressive in relation to the force of the spring recoil.

Panel 2:
THEIR DUTY.
Houdailles do not in any way check the car springs on their compression—viz., the movement given when a road wheel hits a bump—consequently the more supple and easier the car springs, the smoother the car rides over the rough surface, but they completely control the force of the recoil of the springs and thus prevent side sway and road shocks.
