FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} (Additional text includes struck-through 'BJ' and 'WCM.') PHANTOM SPARE WHEEL CARRIER AT REAR (WITHOUT LUGGAGE GRID.) (Handwritten: X8600 (struck-through), X5600) (Stamped: ORIGINAL) The design for this has now been finished and sent to Derby. We have tried to make it so that the maximum number of parts are suitable for both types, namely, with and without luggage carrier. We have also retained the luggage carrier form because it avoids alterations to the petrol tank which would be required if the 20HP. type were used. The scheme we have adopted also permits of a better type of carrying bolt than the 20HP. type, so that it is easy now to take the wheel from the back and put it on the side of the frame with the same parts. All this now forms a more homogeneous and interchangeable system than we have ever had before in our existence, that is to say, you have a spare wheel carrier for the sides of the chassis that can be fitted to one or both sides, but which we hope will be really used (except when luggage is carried at the back) on the luggage carrier. We have also a rear spare wheel carrier with and without luggage grid. We have noticed that a box at the rear for luggage is becoming increasingly fashionable on even town carriages for luggage and parcels at the back. We think this is a good scheme if the body is kept as short as possible, but the box should be made suitable for carrying the rear wheel. Failing this, our latest model of rear wheel carrier lends itself rather well to a box being fitted fairly close to it. We hope some of these suggestions will be of use to the coachbuilding dept.
