Re: Phan.III - Rockers.
Attention when carrying out top decarb:

There has been some misunderstanding with regard to the re-conditioning of worn bushes in the rockers of the hydraulic type.

I believe it was your intention that the Depots should return the bushes and rockers for the bushes to be copper plated and pressed in by the Works. The idea being to prevent undue stress when pressing the bushes in after copper plating. Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} informs me that he did not understand this procedure and read your memo that copper plated bushes were only to be supplied to the Depots; to clear this up I promised to ask you to instruct 6 sets of rockers with solid bushes, 3 for Works Depot and 3 for N. This would tide them over whilst their returns were being corrected.

A rather disturbing feature was stated by Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} that they had tried a set of solid bushes in a repair case and the results were as bad as previous i.e. valves sticking open due to sticking rockers. He assured both LA.{L. A. Archer} and myself that they had reamed out to correct clearance the pressed in bushes. It must be clearly understood that with this job the hydraulic ram plungers must be given their maximum clearance as instructed i.e. .0025. It is no use thinking that they can get away with this trouble by only doing half the job. LA.{L. A. Archer} and myself were perturbed over Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}'s remarks and we are anxious to see further results.
