X163 To Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/JBD.{John B. Dixon - Fuel Systems}3/JH.2.10.36: Report on the S.U. Petrol Pump off 3-AZ-28. (Jack Barclay's Trials Car). This pump was returned to you having failed in Hyde Park. We tried the pump on the rig, and it failed to pick up. The offside of the pump was not working, the magnet moving the armature but not sufficiently to throw over the toggle and break the contacts. This side was dismantled, the diaphragm was found to have shrunk and the distance pieces behind the armature were very dirty. The diaphragm material had the appearance of being subjected to heat or the use of Discol. The delivery valve, which is one of the new brass ones with modified retaining clips, had been inserted the wrong way up. It was making quite a good seating, but it was inclined to be sticky. The suction valve was correct. The nearside of the pump was working, but not pumping. On examination the diaphragm was slightly shrunk but not enough to stop the working of the pump. There was a small wood shaving in the recess above the delivery valve. The suction valve was not seating well and should not have been fitted when the pump was modified. All these brass valves are not 100% and require testing when the change over is made. | ||
