Report attributing the causes of failure in both offside and nearside pumps.

The wood shaving may have been in the pump since manufacture, or got in when the valves were changed.

We attribute the cause of the failure to

(1) The failure of the offside pump to the effect of heat or Discol shrinking the diaphragm.

(2) The failure of the nearside partly to the badly fitted suction valve, which would not let this side pick up by itself after the failure of the offside or the wood shaving becoming lodged in the valve.

The nearside of the pump would work fairly well once it was primed.
