Messrs. S.Smith & Sons Ltd.,
Cricklewood Works,
LONDON, N.W.2.

For the attention of Mr. Dorer.

Dear Sirs,

Referring to your letter of the 18th. inst. we note that you state that the reason for the sticking trouble on the oil gauge unit returned to you, is that the dial has shifted its position slightly. What we want to know, however, is why the dial is able to shift its position slightly.

We are proceeding to return defective instruments to you for the next month or two, and wish to have a detailed report of the troubles which are necessitating the return of these instruments with a view to eliminating the expensive and continuous process of removing instruments from cars and returning same to you for correction, which now takes place.

In accordance with this procedure we are to-day returning to you a thermometer and oil gauge unit, Piece No. D.75025, type X.4581, No.1434 off chassis 3.CP.178 which is a quite recent car. The thermometer portion of this unit is reading at least 10°C too high, and the oil gauge portion does not return to zero.

We should like your detailed report on this as soon as possible, and the instrument should then be corrected and dealt with as instructed by our Order Office.

Yours faithfully,

for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
