R.R. 493a (50m) (D.B. 175 25-9-24) J.H.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. Expl. No. REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/TAG/LG2.2.25. 9-E-456 - 50 HRS: TEST. DISMANTLING REPORT. Carburetters etc. The carburettors, induction pipes and stays are O.K. There is no evidence of any stay or pipe having moved during the 50 hrs. run. Reduction Gear. Planets and sunwheels in S/ZNCR (air hardened). The teeth of the small planet pinions and sunwheel have commenced to 'pit' at each end of the driving side. The sunwheel teeth are very bad in places. Two balls and their cage are broken in No. 3 pinion (large) bearing (Hoffmanns) Nos. 1, and 2 are slack. The first steel plate of the friction anchorage (nearest thrust) is very rusty and when the gear was dismantled a quantity of water ran out of the case. Valves. E.24750 - Firths Silchrome. The valves are in a very good condition, there being no sign of burning or scaling on any of them. There is one valve only which shows signs of blowing (A.2 exhaust) but from the appearance of the stem (which was very dry) there is evidence of a partial seizure, but the valve seating itself is quite free from burning or distortion. The valve stems are all slack in the valve guides, the wear taking place where the thrust of the tappet would be greatest. The tops of the valve stems are O.K., there being no sign of wear due to the tappets rubbing. contd :- | ||
