| Handwritten note: Wyman. Should like to discuss this with you Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. W. c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} re Lagging on Intermediate Silencer - Standardisation Sheet X.223. - Bentley. Referring to the proposal to standardise lagging on the intermediate silencer, certain difficulties arise which render it impossible to lag the silencer in its present position. Firstly, the lagging will foul the frame at the front end where the clearance is already at a minimum. Secondly, it will be impossible to remove the starter motor without taking down the silencerand exhaust pipes. Thirdly, if the silencer centre be moved inwards to avoid fouling frame then the clearance with the starter motor drive cover and the brake mechanism becomes too small, the silencer cannot be lowered either to any extent owing to the limitations of ground clearance. We, therefore, suggest that you make a further test with the lagging modified so that the first 3" of the silencer at the forward end is left exposed. If this is done we avoid the difficulties enumerated above. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} [Signature] | ||
