Messrs. Rolls Royce,
DERBY.

For attention of Mr. Steadman.

Dear Sirs,

Your letter of the 20th January to hand. We note your remarks with regard to the first two paragraphs and it appears that this particular difficulty is now overcome.

With regard to the latter part of your letter, we have run extensive tests on the "C.C" heater and large rheostat which you returned to us and we enclose a full copy of the report on the tests. One of the troubles would appear to have been in the motor as referred to in the report. The difficulty with regard to starting on the first control would appear to be due to the coldness, therefore, stiffness of the motor and it will be observed that this difficulty disappears as the motor warms up. As the operating condition with the motor when run on the earlier controls is not so cold this difficulty would not appear to be serious.

We note your opinion that the spring load on the bushes is too high and this we are investigating.

With regard to the resistance between the last stops of the rheostat this was put in order to limit the maximum speed of the standard motor and thus avoid undue noise. We note you have already removed on one heater this resistance and report that it is functioning satisfactorily. If under this condition the noise is not considered objectionable we have no objection at all in removing this resistance, the procedure which will as you are aware affect in a beneficial manner the operation of the motor on the earlier controls.

We shall be glad to have your comments on this matter.

Yours faithfully,
CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. LTD.
