Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.12/AP.7.2.38 CAR HEATER FOR B.III. AND OTHER CHASSIS. With regard to the car heater to DCD.221 which you schemed for us, the bearings of the fan are extremely noisy, in our opinion for the following reasons:- (a) Because front cone is located on a thread instead of being accurately located on a spigot. (b) Because spindle and cones have been detailed in soft material instead of being case hardened. In view of the fact that the heater was modified expressly in order to permit use of hardened cones, we should take advantage of this. Will you therefore please modify the details to correct these defects as soon as possible as the heater is not fit to be put in the first B.III. car in its present state.
