22.G.V. & 6.B.IV

SERVOS & CAMS.

Re. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}I5/KW.II.9.36.

22.G.V.

Both the Servo fabrics and the cams & thrust races are in excellent condition in all respects. The total mileage covered in England & France with this servo is 29,300 miles.

6.B.IV.

The servo is in bad condition. The driving fabric has bedded on the inner third of its width only, and the driven fabric on the outer third (see sketch I). The cams are slightly slotted by the balls as indicated on sketch II. The thrust races are in a very bad state. The ones attached to the arms are deeply pitted by the balls, the slots being radial as shown. The outer races are pitted in a similar manner but not so badly.

The locating slots for the star springs etc., in the threaded end of the shaft are worn to a taper, and the outer thrust race & star springs had picked up slightly on the shaft, and it was necessary to ease this off.

We should say that at some time, the servo must have been running out of line.
