Ref. N2/B9212. Re Clutches.

The Experimental Dept. have run a clutch fitted with untreated cotton fabric made in sections, for about 50 miles with satisfactory results. The distance run is really no measure of the amount of work the clutch has done, as of course it has been vigorously slipped during this distance.

The first clutch fitted with treated cotton fabric made in one piece is now giving satisfaction, as the preparation has worked out and does not now give trouble from sticking. On the whole the cotton fabric is better than leather for engagement, unless it be compared with a leather clutch which has been disengaged for some period, say, over night, and it will also undoubtedly stand a higher temperature.

The clutch cone with the engaging material formed from tape as mentioned in the 3rd paragraph, has not yet been designed, but Mr Bailey will go into this matter as soon as possible.
