X.8774 To C. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hsl/AD8.11.29. 10-EX CAR. As the decision has been made to withdraw this car from the Aero Dept. then we consider the best thing to do is to sell it. Whilst it was being used by the Aero Dept. we considered it offered us an opportunity of trying out what might be termed "safe experiments". For instance, there are one or two experiments in connection with the silting up of radiators which we should like to try on a Phantom I car, which could be done quite safely on a car which is doing normal duties because we should only want to examine it once every 3 or 4 thousand miles running. There is also a scheme for providing lubrication to the spring leaves which we want to apply to a Phantom I car, it is a perfectly safe thing to do, and we had intended to try it on this car if it was to remain in our hands. There must be however, a number of other Phantom I cars which are being run by the Company which could be used for our purpose. We think it would be economical if it could be arranged that certain experiments which do not alter the appearance and are quite safe, could be tried out on inspectors cars. We should like to have your views on this point. 10-EX car is at present in our hands, and unless we hear from you to the contrary we shall hand it over to Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} to prepare it for sale, but it will certainly mean fitting a new frame, because not only has it been drilled in many places, but the width of the frame is non-standard.
