Digne (France) X9946 Thursd. 7th February 1924 Mr Hives, Exp: Dept. Rolls-Royce Ltd Derby. Dear Sir, Trusting you have received my first report of the 2nd inst. I am sending the present to keep you in touch with the behaviour of the Car, as promised - after crossing the channel we put up at Abbeville on the 2nd, Paris on the 3rd, Fontainebleu on the 4th, Beaune on the 5th, Grenoble on the 6th & here tonight being only about 70 miles from Nice, where we shall be due tomorrow lunch time - The position is as follows: The engine has not given a moment's trouble, except that we cannot exceed 45 miles per hour - I think it is a matter of carburation - The engine feels free & compression is good & even - the start from cold is rather laborious & it does not start unless, in addition to the priming device, one opens the throttle lever on quadrant about 1/2 way - Re oil consumption I have so far replaced 1 1/3 gall. (6 litres) having covered 850 miles since Derby - The clutch has never been entirely satisfactory, though I have tried the most exact adjustment of the four levers inside casing - It disengages now O.K. when starting in the morning - but after a few miles of driving | ||
