Further to our previous memos relating to the introduction of two new fuel specifications D.T.D. 224 and 230, please see attached a copy of A.I.D. Headquarters' instruction relating to the use of fuels to these specifications, particularly for type test.

Although this instruction does not specifically say so, it is thought that particularly where separate supplies of fuel are not held by contractors for type test, and production tests, the same restriction as regards the maximum limit of Octane number must apply for production tests where the new fuels are used for such tests.

It may not be realised that it will be necessary to take and retain samples of each consignment of both fuels as it will be seen from the instructions that we have to notify A.I.D Headquarters as to whether check tests are to be carried out on particular consignments or not.

As you are aware, we do not at the present time carry out any sampling or check tests on doped fuel, but under these instructions we are required to carry out sampling of both fuels although only one of the two is doped.

Bearing in mind the difficulties which are going to be attended with the estimation of the potential gum, it will be necessary to exercise at least the precautions given in Appendix 3 of the specification as regards sampling.

You will note that the A.I.D hope to have a C.F.R engine installed in the A.I.D Test House early in October next, so as to complete the Octane rating of the fuel when complying with the remainder of the specification check.

Will the Order Office note please that fuel to Specification 224 is to have a maximum Octane value of 78 and fuel to Spec. 230 is to have a maximum Octane value of 88, in each case one Octane number above the nominal specification figure.
