X2762 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. Oyl-W-22023 February 20, 1923. PERSONAL Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives, Rolls-Royce, Limited, Derby, England. Dear Hives: Magneto Drive Your letter of January 31. Regarding your note re magneto pinion rattle. * We do not get this with a standard backlash of .002 to .003. On 102-CE which has run 33,000 miles and has a backlash of about .004, we do not get it. We have had it in one case where there was considerably more backlash than this. On replacing the pinion with one having standard backlash, the rattle was cured. 102-CE has run 20,000 miles with the fabric drive in one form or another and 8000 miles with the drive in its present final form. The drive is just the same as the day it was put on, and there is no damage to the pinion or other parts. We remembered that your serrated drive on 4-EX rattled without the brake, but then that must have had quite a little backlash of its own which would probably help it to rattle. We don't find any pinion rattle even when using metal discs, instead of the rubber fabric. We have used nickel plating metal .006 thick, 5 discs each end, for a rough test, and are | ||
