X2762 [handwritten] To EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hsl/LG15.1.23. MAGNETO DRIVE. X2762 With reference to the fabric coupling recently adopted by Springfield. Even though they have a magneto coupling which is silent, we anticipate that they will still find it necessary to use some form of braking in order to get rid of the rattle caused by any slack between the magneto pinion and the cam wheel. It is quite reasonable to imagine that if a small amount of slack in the magneto drive coupling causes a rattle, and [strikethrough] slack between the magneto pinion and the cam wheel will also cause a rattle. Add [handwritten] By the addition of a rubber [strikethrough] spring in our present serrated drive, we can make the magneto drive itself silent. Our experiments so far show that we shall still have to introduce some form of brake on the magneto pinion. This may be carried out inside the wheelcase so that the brake is automatically lubricated.
