X4190 S.X. c. to Sft.{Mr Swift} c. to EH. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}12/F18.12.19. RE. FITTING & DISMANTLING OF GUDGEON PINS. A special tool has been devised, and is now being used in the test shop, for the above. We have found this very satisfactory, as gudgeon pins can be dismantled and fixed in position and if necesary, the position of locking pins checked without any distortion or hammering of the gudgeon pin, which we have found in the past has been very disastrous from a distortion point of view, as well as detrimental to the "set" of the connecting rods. In view of the very disastrous effect on the running of the engine caused by the above troubles, I am anxious that tool, or a similar tool, should be standardised and supplied to all parties who have occasion to do any dismantling or erecting work on this particular job. It may also be considered advisable for such a tool to be supplied with the spares. In any case, I certainly recommend that tools of this sort should be supplied and despatched to our Depots. If a dozen of these tools could be made and supplied to me, I will see that they are distributed as above suggested. A sample tool, as above described can be obtained from the Test Dept. on application. EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} | ||
