WATFORD MAGNETOS OF "F" AND "H" ENGINE TYPE X4021 X4513W AND OF LIGHTENED TYPE FOR "R" ENGINES. General reference has been made to these magnetos in our concurrent report EFC1/AD20.9.29, also please find below copy of my assistant's report W.D.78. dealing with details of test and observation of Watford machines, both of a pair of IS.12 type used on the type test engine F.14-S-13 and a pair of SP.{Mr Spinney}12/5 magnetos utilised by one of the "R" test engines. "A pair of these magnetos Nos.98033/4 have run 53 hours in the course of a type test on F.14-S-13, and would have continued but for a breakdown of the engine. We have examined these magnetos, completely dismantling one of them for inspection, and found them to be in perfect condition. The contact breaker wear on the platinum points was negligible, with no signs of burning due to ingress of oil vapour. As a result of this and other tests we have made, our confidence in this new Watford aero magneto is definitely established, particularly as it embodies several features which we consider are superior to the B.T.H. construction e.g. internal L.T. connection, bronze end plate for contact breaker bearing, and improved screening. | ||
