RE. STEERING CONTROL RATTLES.

We still continue to have trouble and complaints of rattles from the above.

The Works have submitted to us two samples of lubrication schemes for the fixed tube, one of which they point out has been in actual practice for years, whereas the other one is in accordance with the drawing.

We submit that the scheme which is in actual practice is the most satisfactory and we suggest that this should be continued.

The point we are anxious to bring forward, however, is that some attention and improvement is required in the fitting of these controls so as to avoid the rattling complained of. With cars on which we have had this complaint, special attention has been given to the fitting of the tubes so that they are correct to drawing instructions in every way. After the car has been in service for some time, the rattle undoubtedly develops, and it would appear that some spring control arrangement is required for the tubes, to overcome this trouble.

We shall be glad if this point could receive your serious attention.

We want to make it clear that although on cars which have come to the Works for attention people complain of rattling controls, we have re-metalled the top bush, put a slight set in the tubes, and also liberally greased the controls with Graphite, and the rattling has re-developed in such instances after a few weeks' running.
