Howlett, Esq., Wellworthy Piston Rings Limited, Lymington, HANTS: Dear Howlett, We had a visit from Mr. Markland of the Leyland Research on Friday last week, and he told us that they proposed to put through production immediately 25 cub engines with A.C.9 bearings throughout. We told him that with regard to main bearings, we would recommend that they left the flywheel bearing in white metal as this is what we were at present running as standard. Incidentally, there rear main bearing is of very adequate area. The question then arose with regard to the supply of these shells in the rough machined and fully heat-treated condition. Mr. Markland urged that these bearings should be obtained with the minimum of delay, as they have been playing about with the job for a long time, and he was anxious to go on production. In view of the urgency of the matter, Mr. Matthews rang up Wellworthys, and owing to Mr. Blackith's absence, spoke to one of his staff. We pointed out that we could get the bearings in the required condition in 14 days, and as Wellworthys' Representative seemed to think that this was better than anything they could do, we agreed, in this particular instance, to undertake the work.
