SECRET. +304 To E.V. from E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} c. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Fd.{Frank Dodd - Bodies} E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}1/HP.26.2.35. Mounting of Body on Second SpectreCodename for Phantom III - 31-EX. The following difficulties were pointed out to us by the Experimental Department whilst they were mounting this body. (1) The two rearmost body brackets on each side were fixed to the body in such a way that they would not pass over the chassis sidemembers. It was necessary to take them off the wheel arches and fit taper packings behind them to allow them to pass over the chassis sidemembers. After this had been done the faces of the brackets on the bodies were not square with the brackets on the chassis and taper packings had to be made and fitted between the two. (2) Excessive thickness of body bracket packings had to be employed throughout. In some cases these were nearly 1" thick. It appears that the body brackets require raising on the frame. (3) The new type of body brackets with the stiffening pieces at their ends on the top sides make it very difficult to vary the thickness of the packing pieces for adjusting doors etc. It was found necessary to raise the body right off the chassis every time an adjustment had to be made to the packings. (4) The hinges on the lower door of the luggage carrier compartment foul the petrol tank when the door is in a closed position. The hinges are unnecessarily heavy for the job they have to do and can be altered in shape quite easily to prevent fouling the petrol tank. (5) Coachbuilders complain that the body appeared to be | ||
